Senior Geologist
Job Title: Senior Geologist
Reports to: EVP Engineering
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly commercial, execution-oriented Senior Geologist to lead geoscience efforts across a growing upstream oil and gas company. This role is suited for a results-driven geologist with a strong commercial mindset and a track record of advancing opportunities from initial scoping through drilling and execution.
The right candidate will be comfortable working across multiple basins and project types, managing outside consultants, and helping drive both operated development and A&D screening efforts. This individual will play a central role in shaping the company’s geoscience function and will have a clear path toward a broader geology leadership role over time.
Responsibilities:
- Lead geologic evaluation and interpretation across a variety of upstream projects in the Lower 48
- Advance opportunities from initial concept and scoping through drilling recommendations, execution support, and post-well evaluation
- Provide geologic input for well planning, prospect maturation, risk assessment, and AFE-related workflows
- Work closely with engineering, land, management, and external technical teams to move projects efficiently toward execution
- Screen and evaluate acquisition and divestiture opportunities, including rapid technical assessments and commercial scoping
- Support operated and non-operated asset evaluations across conventional resource plays, with working knowledge of shale and horizontal development concepts
- Manage and coordinate external geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists, and other consultants as needed
- Jump between multiple active projects and basins without losing momentum or attention to detail
- Help establish internal geoscience standards, workflows, and best practices as the company grows
- Contribute to strategic thinking around basin entry, prospect ranking, development pacing, and capital allocation
Required Skills:
- Additional exposure to shale plays, horizontal development, and unconventional workflows preferred
- Demonstrated ability to move projects from scoping to execution
- Commercial mindset with strong judgment on what matters and what drives value
- Comfortable managing third-party consultants and integrating outside technical work into decision-making
- Strong A&D evaluation experience, including screening, rapid assessments, and technical support for transactions
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
Education and Experience:
- 5–15 years of relevant upstream oil and gas experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field; master’s degree preferred.
- Strong conventional oil and gas background in the Lower 48 required
- Additional exposure to shale plays, horizontal development, and unconventional workflows preferred
- Experience working across multiple basins and geologic settings
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who can operate as the senior geologic leader within the company, someone who can balance technical depth with commercial judgment, handle multiple moving pieces at once, and help translate geoscience into executable business decisions. This is an opportunity for a geologist who wants meaningful responsibility, broad exposure, and a path toward helping build and lead the geoscience function within a growing company.
